Words with Nerds is produced by Best of Madison-winner Cheshire Cat Comedy and began in 2022 as a monthly event on the third Thursday of every month at Crucible, Madison’s premier alternative arts club. The showcase has since blossomed into a featured showcase at locations such as The Forward Club at Breese Stevens Field; Comedy Cabin in Janesville, WI; and The Lincoln Lodge in Chicago, IL. Presenters span entrepreneurs, educators, researchers, activists, union organizers, surgeons, engineers, and stand-up comedians with an itch to nerd out on stage.

Every now and then, Words with Nerds adds in a little splash of something extra; past examples include Rick Sanchez of Rick and Morty performing a burlesque number and Batman doing stand-up comedy.

Parties interested in presenting at Words with Nerds are invited to send their pitches to cheshirecatcomedyco@gmail.com.

What is the USL League One in-season cup?

The cup is an in-season tournament of all 12 clubs in the league, set to begin in 2024. There will be three groups of four clubs each, built to emphasize regional rivalries. Each club will play a total of eight matches in their respective group play – four home and four away.

Each club will play their groupmates twice, plus play an additional two matches against two different clubs from another group, based on geographic proximity. Group play will determine the four teams that will advance to the knockout round. The final will take place on the weekend of September 28-29.

All cup matches will take place during dedicated match weeks throughout the season, starting in April. League play will not take place during these windows.

How does the scoring system work for the cup?

All cup matches that finish in a tie at the end of regulation will feature a penalty shootout. No overtime will be played.

Teams will be awarded:

  • three (3) points for a win

  • one (1) point for a draw in regulation time

  • one (1) extra point for winning a penalty shootout

  • zero (0) points for a loss

The winners of each group will advance to the four-team knockout round. The fourth team to advance will be the team that scores the most goals and has not won their group.

What’s the prize?

The winning team will receive prize money. The trophy and additional fan-centric cup-related initiatives will be announced soon.

Who and when will Forward Madison FC play?

Forward Madison FC will play in the Central Group with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, One Knoxville SC, and Lexington SC.

The Mingos play their first cup match on April 28th on the road against Lexington SC. The two teams that Forward will face outside of their group are Charlotte Independence on May 11th and Union Omaha on August 29th. Kickoff times and broadcast information will be announced soon.

“We are excited for a change in competition format that will focus on adding games of consequence and regional rivalries,” Forward Madison FC Chief Operating Officer Conor Caloia said. “These changes are made to enhance the fan experience. We believe this competition provides a great platform for the future and we look forward to hosting Cup matches in 2024.”

Teased from the loam by the kiss of the Sun. Mom’s Strawberry Rhubarb delights are the happy memories of childhood. Diploma Master Brewer Dan employed juicy sweet Strawberries to tame the barbaric wild tart fermentation of rhubarb. Escaped from the far corners of neighboring yards, local rhubarb was incorporated into the wild sour fermentation to create this drinkable dream. Bright sour and effervescent. Toast chilled cold to Bright skies, fireflies, bare feet and rhubarb pies!

Vibrant, bright and crisp. Watermelon Splash is 100% natural with zero artificial sweetners. Wisconsin malt serves up 4.0% ABV, only 105 calories and 6.5 g of carefree carbs.

A provocative and refreshing burst of watermelon joy!

Quests of unobtainable perfection exist. Brewmaster Dan's Holy Grail is the perfect pilsner. His ideal being an old school blur of German and Czech styles. Heirloom pilsner malted barley and a double decoction mash begin the maddeningly complex journey. Joined by Bavarian royalty Diamant, Mittelfrüh, Saphir, Select and Hallertau Blanc hops that gracefully weigh in a quaffable 35 IBU. The simplicity of a six week lager forges this pilsner treasure.

100% Natural - great Midwestern and European Malts, the world's most expensive hops, fresh yeast from Germany, and clear Wisconsin water make our Staghorn Octoberfest "Wisconsin's Real Red." You will find absolutely no additives, preservatives or artificial agents of any kind in this bier. Staghorn is brewed using the time honored methods to release the smooth flavor of our roasted malts.

This Octoberfest combines a smooth amber body with a clean, crisp finish. Be sure to hold this one up to the light of any harvest moon and enjoy "Wisconsin's Real Red."

Introducing the newest addition to our R&D series, Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale! Strong, malty, and aged in whiskey barrels, this wee heavy style ale delivers a complexity of flavor.

ABOUT CAGE THE ELEPHANT:

Since forming in 2006, Cage The Elephant have quietly bloomed as one of this generation’s premier rock bands buoyed by uncompromising creativity and wildly cathartic performances.

Thus far, they have earned dozens of Gold, Platinum, and Multi Platinum certifications, tallied 5 billion streams and counting, and notched ten #1 records on Alternative Radio and 5 #1 records on Triple A Radio. The guys consecutively garnered two GRAMMY® Awards in the category of “Best Rock Album” for both Tell Me I’m Pretty [2015] and Social Cues [2019]. Of the latter, Entertainment Weekly raved, “The album's introspection paired with its urgent energy make Cage The Elephant sound more passionate than ever.”

In the meantime, their music has also surged through popular culture as “Cigarette Daydreams” graced the soundtrack of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 blockbuster video game, “Goodbye” appeared in The Summer I Turned Pretty, and “Trouble” powered a global campaign for Amazon Prime. Plus, they’re the rare force of nature who can inspire millions of TikTok creates or hold their own on stage with Dave Grohl and duet with Iggy Pop and Beck.

The Kentucky-bred six-piece instinctually lean on their enduring bond as both musicians and friends to get through anything and everything. Together, the band members make sense of life’s unpredictability and uncertainty via music. Moments of elation might take the form of sticky hooks, swaggering rhythms, or upbeat guitars, while tense riffs and jittery grooves could give shape to feelings of anxiety, doubt, or instability. As such, the group fearlessly alchemize a season of tragedy and turbulence into the twelve tracks on their sixth full-length album, Neon Pill [RCA Records].

Cheshire Cat Comedy Presents...: A Stand-Up Comedy Show

Hot Ones meets stand-up as comedians improvise while eating spicy peppers. Headlined by CHARLIE KOJIS:

Charlie Kojis has been performing stand-up comedy since 2014, during which time he has been described as “this generation’s Charlie Kojis.” Combining his life experiences and general fears, Charlie blends traditional joke telling with his own personal narrative. His dry delivery leaves audiences both laughing and wondering if he is as okay as he pretends to be. Based in Madison WI, Charlie performs throughout the Midwest and has performed in the Flyover, Limestone, and 10,000 Laughs Comedy Festivals, among others. He has opened for comedians who include Tig Notaro, Nate Bargatze, and Michael Che and was the winner of Madison's Funniest Comic Competition at Comedy on State in 2016. He released his debut comedy album and special, A Normal Amount of Pain, in May 2023.
