Forward Madison FC Announce “Battle For Madison” Match Against UW-Madison in April

MADISON, WI: Madison’s most thrilling rivalry between Forward Madison FC and the UW-Madison Men’s Soccer team is set to take place this April. Forward Madison FC will host the annual “Battle for Madison” match at historic Breese Stevens Field on April 20th at 5pm CT.

Forward Madison will look to continue their unbeaten streak against the Badgers, going 2-0-2 in the last five years (the 2020 match was canceled due to COVID-19). Most recently, the Mingos won 3-2 in a back-and-forth match in April of last year.

The ‘Mingos have a few special connections with the UW-Madison Soccer program. Assistant Coach, Jim Launder, was the former head coach for the Badgers from 1982-1996. Under Launder’s leadership the Badgers won their only NCAA championship in 1995. Director of Soccer Operations, Keith Tiemeyer, was a former assistant coach for the program, from 2009-2022. During his time at UW-Madison, Tiemeyer took the team to two NCAA tournaments and a Sweet 16 appearance, and was honored as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation in 2013 and 2018. Forward Futures Director, Aaron Hohlbein, both played and coached for the UW-Badgers, as well.

Purchase your match ticket to the Battle For Madison here. UW Credit Union Members will be eligible to receive FREE tickets to the Battle For Madison by entering the first six digits of their card here.

Cheshire Cat Comedy Presents...Words with Nerds: A Stand-Up Comedy Show

Join us on Friday, April 26 to enjoy a great show for information sponges who love to laugh! Words with Nerds mixes TED Talks with stand-up by bringing together local specialists and comedians to present on a topic of their choice. Come for the chortles and walk away with strange new knowledge; previous performers have regaled audiences with presentations on traffic simulations, a principal component analysis of the Taco Bell Menu, nipple equality activism in Madison, how people misuse statistics, what can be learned from watching 100 Hallmark movies, how to perform self-surgery, and much, much more.

Words with Nerds is produced by Best of Madison-winner Cheshire Cat Comedy and began in 2022 as a monthly event on the third Thursday of every month at Crucible, Madison’s premier alternative arts club. The show has since blossomed into a regular feature at locations such as The Forward Club at Breese Stevens Field and Comedy Cabin in Janesville, Wisconsin.

Every now and then, Words with Nerds adds a little splash of something extra; past examples include Rick Sanchez of Rick and Morty performing a burlesque number and Batman doing stand-up comedy.

Past presenters span local entrepreneurs, professors, researchers, activists, union organizers, surgeons, engineers, and stand-up comedians with an itch to nerd out on stage. Parties interested in presenting at Words with Nerds are invited to send their pitches to cheshirecatcomedyco@gmail.com.

About Willie Nelson:

With a seven-decade career, Willie Nelson has earned every conceivable award as a musician and amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor, and activist. He continues to thrive as a relevant and progressive musical and cultural force. In recent years, he has delivered more than a dozen new albums, released a Top 10 New York Times' bestsellers book, again headlined Farm Aid (an event he co-founded in 1985) and his annual Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic, been honored by the Library of Congress with their Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, received his 5th degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul, headlined the annual Luck Reunion food and music festival during SXSW, launched his cannabis companies Willie's Reserve and Willie's Remedy, and graced the covers of Rolling Stone and AARP The Magazine. Nelson started this decade by releasing four albums of newly recorded music—First Rose of Spring (2020), That’s Life (2021), The Willie Nelson Family (2021), and A Beautiful Time (2022, GRAMMY Award winner for Best Country Album)—and three books—Me and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of The Family Band (2020), Willie Nelson’s Letters to America (2021), and Me and Paul: Untold Tale of a Fabled Friendship (2022).

Throughout 2023, Willie celebrated his 90th birthday with multiple projects and events including a two-night star-studded concert, Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90, that took place in April at the famed Hollywood Bowl, and released as a feature film in June. The year began with the debut of "Wille Nelson & Family," a new five-part film documentary series directed by Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival as well as the release of a new album, I Don't Know a Thing About Lovewhich features 10 performances that pay tribute to American songwriter Harlan Howard. From June to October, Nelson headlines the annual Outlaw Music Festival Tour

In the Fall of ‘23, two new releases debuted: an album, Bluegrass (with newly recorded studio performances of 12 Willie Nelson-penned classics showcasing Willie with a bluegrass ensemble released September 15th, 2023), and a new book, Energy Follows Thought (with stories behind the lyrics of 160 of his favorite songs, along with never-before-seen photos and ephemera that arrived on October 31st, 2023).

On November 3rd, 2023, Nelson was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. These creative endeavors as well as new songs and performances that add to his classic catalog, find Willie Nelson rolling at an artistic peak, writing and singing and playing with the seasoned wit and wisdom that comes from the road.

Forward Madison FC v One Knoxville SC

Introducing League One's in-season cup. This competition brings another level of drama to the year, building our regional rivalries and giving us new hardware to chase.

Starting in 2024, Forward Madison FC will compete in the first-ever USL League One in-season cup competition. Here’s everything you need to know about what the Mingos will be playing for.

What is the USL League One in-season cup?

The cup is an in-season tournament of all 12 clubs in the league, set to begin in 2024. There will be three groups of four clubs each, built to emphasize regional rivalries. Each club will play a total of eight matches in their respective group play – four home and four away.

Each club will play their groupmates twice, plus play an additional two matches against two different clubs from another group, based on geographic proximity. Group play will determine the four teams that will advance to the knockout round. The final will take place on the weekend of September 28-29.

All cup matches will take place during dedicated match weeks throughout the season, starting in April. League play will not take place during these windows.

How does the scoring system work for the cup?

All cup matches that finish in a tie at the end of regulation will feature a penalty shootout. No overtime will be played.

Teams will be awarded:

  • three (3) points for a win

  • one (1) point for a draw in regulation time

  • one (1) extra point for winning a penalty shootout

  • zero (0) points for a loss

The winners of each group will advance to the four-team knockout round. The fourth team to advance will be the team that scores the most goals and has not won their group.

What’s the prize?

The winning team will receive prize money. The trophy and additional fan-centric cup-related initiatives will be announced soon.

Who and when will Forward Madison FC play?

Forward Madison FC will play in the Central Group with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, One Knoxville SC, and Lexington SC.

The Mingos play their first cup match on April 28th on the road against Lexington SC. The two teams that Forward will face outside of their group are Charlotte Independence on May 11th and Union Omaha on August 29th. Kickoff times and broadcast information will be announced soon.

“We are excited for a change in competition format that will focus on adding games of consequence and regional rivalries,” Forward Madison FC Chief Operating Officer Conor Caloia said. “These changes are made to enhance the fan experience. We believe this competition provides a great platform for the future and we look forward to hosting Cup matches in 2024.”

Season tickets for the 2024 Forward Madison season are on sale now.

Secure your seats to every match, including all of the action from the first-ever in-season cup tournament, here.

USA Ultimate 2024 College Championships

2024 College Championships Awarded to Milwaukee, Madison

Colorado Springs, Colo. (November 16, 2023)—The nation’s top college ultimate teams will return to Wisconsin next spring for the 2024 USA Ultimate College Championships, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States announced today.

The culmination of the college ultimate season will again occur on back-to-back weekends as Milwaukee and Madison were selected to host the Division III and Division I College Championships respectively.

The Division III College Championships will take place May 18-20 at Uihlein Soccer Park and will be co-hosted by the Milwaukee Ultimate Club and Sports Milwaukee. Scott Severson will serve as tournament director.

The Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association, Wisconsin Ultimate, and the Madison Area Sports Commission and Destination Madison will co-host the Division I College Championships at Reddan Soccer Complex and Breese Stevens Field, May 24-27. Fran Kelley will serve as tournament director.

“Sports Milwaukee is thrilled to bring the D-III Championships to Milwaukee for the third time at Uihlein Soccer Park,” said Sports Milwaukee Director Marissa Werner. “Our team, along with our partners, are ready to showcase collegiate-level competition and welcome more than 2,000 athletes and supporters to our wonderful city.”

Uihlein Soccer Park previously hosted the D-III Championships in 2013 and 2022, as well as the D-I Championships in 2015, 2018 and 2022.

The D-III tournament will host 32 teams – 16 each in the men’s and women’s divisions – and features programs from schools with enrollment of less than 7,500 students. Colorado College and Middlebury College (Vt.) are defending champions in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively.

“Madison has long been a leader in ultimate and we are thrilled to work with USA Ultimate once again by hosting their premier collegiate teams in 2024,” said Jamie Patrick, VP of Convention Sales, Sports, and Services for Madison Area Sports Commission and Destination Madison. “With college teams returning to Madison next year, it will be hard to beat competition at Reddan and historic Breese Stevens Filed as we continue to grow our area’s legacy in the sport.”

Madison previously hosted the D-I Championships in 1991, 2010 and 2013.

Forty teams (20 men’s, 20 women’s) will compete at the D-I Championships. North Carolina are three-time defending champions in both divisions, having captured national titles in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The USA Ultimate College Championships serve as the finale of the college ultimate season. Each year, more than 600 teams from across the county compete for a spot at nationals, playing throughout a 13-week regular season before a series of conference and regional tournaments pares the field down to the teams that qualify for nationals.

About Train:

Train is a multi-GRAMMY and Billboard Award-winning band from San Francisco that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list since the release of their debut self-titled album. Train's climb to the top began in 1994, as the original 5-member band tenaciously built a loyal hometown following, leading up to their debut album, released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of "Meet Virginia'' gave them their first unlikely radio hit and 2001’s Drops of Jupiter broke them to multi-platinum status thanks to the double-Grammy Award-winning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40, has been certified 7x platinum in the US, and earned the 2001 GRAMMY Award for Best Rock Song. The group won another GRAMMY Award in 2011 for their global hit “Hey, Soul Sister'' from their multi-platinum album Save Me, San Francisco. “Hey, Soul Sister '' was the No.1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, achieved RIAA Diamond status in 2021 and now 11x platinum, and in 2022 surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. Train has sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide, with multiple platinum/gold citations, including three GRAMMY Awards, two Billboard Music Awards and dozens of other honors. They’ve had 12 albums on the Billboard 200 albums chart with their 2014 Bulletproof Picasso reaching No. 4 in 2012 and 2017’s a girl a bottle a boat debuting at No. 8. “Play That Song,” the lead single from a girl a bottle a boat, went platinum in four countries including the U.S., hit Top 5 on the US iTunes chart, Top 10 at Hot AC radio, and charted at Adult Top 40. Train’s highly anticipated 11th studio album, AM Gold, was released on May 20, 2022.

Train frontman, Pat Monahan, partakes in other ventures outside of music, including his award-winning wine portfolio, Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co, which was created in 2011 and has sold over 10 million bottles and won over 100 medals. Proceeds from his wine business support Family House, a San Francisco charity that supports families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Monahan has appeared on television and in film with credits that include the 2021 Hallmark Channel original movie, Christmas in Tahoe, inspired by Train’s album of the same name, which he executive produced and starred, Dr. Ken, 90210, CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I., The Voice, American Idol, and The Bachelor.

ABOUT CAGE THE ELEPHANT:

Since forming in 2006, Cage The Elephant have quietly bloomed as one of this generation’s premier rock bands buoyed by uncompromising creativity and wildly cathartic performances.

Thus far, they have earned dozens of Gold, Platinum, and Multi Platinum certifications, tallied 5 billion streams and counting, and notched ten #1 records on Alternative Radio and 5 #1 records on Triple A Radio. The guys consecutively garnered two GRAMMY® Awards in the category of “Best Rock Album” for both Tell Me I’m Pretty [2015] and Social Cues [2019]. Of the latter, Entertainment Weekly raved, “The album's introspection paired with its urgent energy make Cage The Elephant sound more passionate than ever.”

In the meantime, their music has also surged through popular culture as “Cigarette Daydreams” graced the soundtrack of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 blockbuster video game, “Goodbye” appeared in The Summer I Turned Pretty, and “Trouble” powered a global campaign for Amazon Prime. Plus, they’re the rare force of nature who can inspire millions of TikTok creates or hold their own on stage with Dave Grohl and duet with Iggy Pop and Beck.

The Kentucky-bred six-piece instinctually lean on their enduring bond as both musicians and friends to get through anything and everything. Together, the band members make sense of life’s unpredictability and uncertainty via music. Moments of elation might take the form of sticky hooks, swaggering rhythms, or upbeat guitars, while tense riffs and jittery grooves could give shape to feelings of anxiety, doubt, or instability. As such, the group fearlessly alchemize a season of tragedy and turbulence into the twelve tracks on their sixth full-length album, Neon Pill [RCA Records].

Introducing League One's in-season cup. This competition brings another level of drama to the year, building our regional rivalries and giving us new hardware to chase.
